Why Kyrgios is so excited about playing the Davis Cup

Nick Kyrgios had an erratic summer. The Australian retired for various injuries at Queen’s, Wimbledon and in Washington. He struggled with his fitness also in Montreal to then reach the final in Cincinnati without dropping a single set and after beating Nadal in straight sets. When everything looked good, Nick crashed out at the US Open at the hands of his compatriot John Milliman.

Why Nick likes the Davis Cup

The Australian has recently stated that he is not dedicated at all to the sport, but he has always professed his love for the Davis Cup probably also to help his “mate” and mentor Lleyton Hewitt that is also the captain of his team the captain.

In an interview preceding the Davis Cup tie, Nick commented

“Davis Cup has done wonders for me this year. I’m just a massive fan of team sports, and that’s probably the closest thing we’ve got in tennis. I love getting out there with a team and getting behind everyone that I’m close with and trying to get the win for the country obviously.

But just that whole week, building that chemistry with a team. I literally love playing for someone other than myself for once.

Our team’s feeling good. We played a great tie in Brisbane against the United States a couple of months ago, and we’ve always been looking forward to this. We’ve always stayed in contact; we haven’t forgotten about it.

Just thinking about it brings me so much excitement. To take home, the trophy would be probably a dream come true for me.”

The Davis Cup semi-final will be played the 15th-17th of September in Brussels on indoor clay courts. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are supposed to be the two Australian playing the singles. On the other side, Darcis should play alongside Goffin.
