Muguruza impressed in defeating Kerber

Garbine Muguruza has another fantastic run in Wimbledon. The 2015 runner-up defeated the world no.1 Angelique Kerber in a passionate 3-setter to reach the quarters at the Championships.

The match

After exchanging the first two sets, the Spaniard was 0-2 down in the decider with Kerber playing in her groove. Eventually, Garbine managed to keep her focus and a very aggressive tennis to break the German twice before conquering the match. The final score was 4-6 6-4 6-4 with both players scoring the same amount of points (101).

The key of the match was to make the points short. MUGURUZA

Soon after the match, Garbine explained how she managed to defeat Angelique

“When you have somebody that it’s so, you know, physically strong, so solid, the more you win free points or make it shorter, it’s better. It’s also part of my game. Like I said before, I like to don’t wait for 20 shots. You know, I go for it. Today I think was a key to make short points sometimes.”

After this loss, Angelique is certain to lose her world no.1 rank. After Wimbledon, we will have a new WTA leader. That will be Simona Halep if she wins the next match; if Simona doesn’t make it, Karolina Pliskova will be the new queen of the rankings.

Next vs. Kuznetsova

Garbine will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarters. The head to head is 3-1 for the Spaniard that is the favorite to reach the final four because her game is much more suited for the grass than Svetlana’s.
