Wheelchair tennis: Esther Vergeer celebrates 10 years unbeaten

Being unlucky and forced to be stuck on a wheelchair can be something really depressing. But everything is just in your mind and Esther Vergeer managed to transform something really bad in an opportunity.

The wheelchair tennis superstar has now achieved the incredible as she managed to remain unbeaten for 10 years.

Her current run is of an astonishing 470 consecutive matches won (and counting), 169 titles, 42 Grand Slams, 95 matches won with a double bagel (6-0 6-0). In her entire career she has faced only 1 match point in the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

All of this didn’t come by chance, but with a super dedication.

About her last loss

Esther lost her last match the 30th of January 2003 and she got it as an important learning experience Daniela Di Toro from Australia.

“I learned a lot from that match,” she says. “I saw it as a start-up, to become more professional and focused.

“After that I have been more successful than ever, so it’s good to have such moments and it’s good that wheelchair tennis is developing, so I will get more of those moments in the future.”

About Wheelchair tennis

“Our sport has become more grown up, and it’s more accepted that ever before,” Esther said. “Worldwide it has grown a lot. But I have a lot of ambition and every day I see something I can improve.

“It could be just half a percentage of a better forehand, or a stronger serve. And if you can improve, then that motivates.”

Playing match by match

“The winning streak is not my main goal,” she added.”Every time I play I have wanted to win that match, it’s not something I work towards. The competition is getting stronger so it will be tougher and tougher.”

There is only 1 word: UNBELIEVABLE… can’t be more inspiring than that
