Wilander anticipates historic showdown Between Alcaraz and Sinner at Wimbledon

Wilander believes an Alcaraz-Sinner Wimbledon 2024 final would be as historically significant as past Federer-Nadal and McEnroe-Borg finals.

Wilander Anticipates Historic Showdown Between Alcaraz And Sinner At Wimbledon

The former world No. 1 believes that a Wimbledon 2024 final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner would hold the same historical significance as previous legendary matches like those between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.

Sinner, the current world No. 1, and Alcaraz, ranked third, are both positioned in the top half of the Wimbledon draw. This means they could meet in the semi-finals rather than the final. Seven-time winner and No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic and fourth seed Alexander Zverev are in the bottom half of the draw.

Alcaraz and Sinner have faced each other nine times, with Alcaraz leading their head-to-head 5-4. Their Grand Slam encounters have been particularly memorable. Sinner defeated Alcaraz in four sets during the fourth round of Wimbledon 2022. Later that year, Alcaraz saved a match point to beat Sinner in a five-set thriller at the US Open quarter-finals, eventually winning his first Grand Slam title. Most recently, Alcaraz triumphed over Sinner in another five-set battle in the semi-finals of the 2024 French Open, securing his third Major title.

At the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, both players have already advanced past the first round. Sinner overcame Yannick Hanfmann in four sets, while defending champion Alcaraz defeated Mark Lajal in straight sets.

Mats Wilander, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, expressed his disappointment that the Wimbledon draw prevents a final showdown between Sinner and Alcaraz this year. He emphasized the importance of these young stars facing each other in a Major final to further establish their dominance and the revolution they are leading in tennis.

“We’ve already had Alcaraz-Sinner in Grand Slams, but not in the final, and we’ve reached a stage where we need them,” Wilander told L’Equipe. “Because we all know that we have two superstars here who will feel very comfortable with the idea of winning and winning again for a long time. They need to further establish the revolution they are leading by facing each other for a Major title. Moreover, if we could have had a Wimbledon 2024 final between these two, it would have had, in my opinion, the same historical significance as the Federer-Nadal finals in 2007 and 2008 or the McEnroe-Borg finals in 1980 and 1981.”
