Former world No. 8 Diego Schwartzman recently shared intriguing insights into the personality of tennis legend Roger Federer, revealing that the Swiss icon was quite different off the court than many perceived. Federer, known for his polished public image and professionalism, displayed a mischievous streak with his team during training sessions.
Speaking on the Argentine TV show La Noche Perfecta, Schwartzman explained that Federer, despite his graceful demeanor on court, could be a prankster behind the scenes. According to Schwartzman, Federer would often hit balls at his team at 150 km/h during practice, causing them to scramble in order to avoid getting hit. Federer would burst out laughing, clearly enjoying the chaos he had created. Schwartzman added that Federer would even engage in playful antics, such as pulling down his pants, comparing it to the type of mischief common among Argentinians.
Although Schwartzman and Federer met on the ATP Tour several times, with Federer winning every match, their encounters revealed the lighter side of Federer that fans rarely see. Their closest match was at the 2015 Istanbul Open, where Federer ultimately triumphed 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
As Schwartzman prepares for his retirement in early 2025, he reflected fondly on his experiences with Federer, noting the contrast between the Swiss legend’s public persona and his behind-the-scenes behavior.
