Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer, shocked the tennis community today by announcing his immediate retirement from the sport on social media.
Ymer made his choice public after failing to appeal the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) punishment for breaking the anti-doping code.
Ymer wrote on his official Twitter account: “I’ve decided to retire from professional tennis. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in the competition. God is great always.”
In January 2022, the ITF accused Ymer of possibly violating anti-doping rules after he failed to show up for three attempts at tests outside of competition during a 12-month span. He contested the allegations and then claimed that a neutral panel had cleared him in June 2022.
The ITF did, however, appeal the ruling. Due to this, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided to partially uphold the two-year penalty before later suspending it for 18 months starting in July 2023.
