Roger Federer has been missing the clay court season for the last 2 years (2017 and 2018) in order to save energy for the grass court season that is the most important for him. That worked well in 2017 because he won Halle and Wimbledon, but it wasn’t that great this year after he won “only” Stuttgart.

What Federer said and why he wants to play on clay

Roger is currently in Chicago where he is about to play the Laver Cup, and during one of his interviews, he admitted that he might return to play on the dirt in 2019 to comment

“The clay-court season is under review.  I would like to make up my mind ahead of time so I can plan my buildup, my fitness schedule, even the way I would approach my December practice sessions. It could benefit the clay-court season.

The No. 2-ranked Federer knows what he is up against. “This is something that is obviously a big deal. If you play the clay, it changes everything.

When asked why he wanted to get back to play on clay, Roger gave the best possible answer “Just because I want to do it. It’s a full-on passion thing.”
