Berdych, Tomic and Tsonga advance in Marseille

We have some interesting results in Marseille. Even if the homecrowd lost a couple of entertaining players such as Gasquet and Monfils in the early rounds, they still have Tsonga, Benneteau (in great form), Simon and Llodra to defend the colours of their country.

The local crowd was also blessed by a very interesting match between Berdych (seed no.1) and Gulbis. It took 2 hours and 12 minutes for the Czech to defeat the Latvian 6-4 6-7 (10) 6-4. Most notably Tomas had to cope with 19 aces (on 16 service games) from Ernest. The difference between the two was that Gublis broke Berdych only once (he had 5 break points) while Berdych converted all 3 break points. The good news is that Gulbis seems to have found a good tennis.

Tomic had a good win againt Somdev Devvarman. The Indian is now playing quite a good tennis to be a diffuclt customer. Tomic kept his cool to win 6-3 7-5 in 72 minutes.

Finally Tsonga defeated Davydenko 7-6 (1) 6-3. A solid match where Jo didn’t concede a single break point.

Tsonga and Tomic will play against each other in the quarters. Head to head is 1-0 for Tsonga.

In the other matches surprising Muller upset also Granolles 7-6 (2 6-6 (1) after stunning Gasquet in the first round. Benneteau defeated wildcarded Pouille 7-6 (0) 6-3. Simon defeated Haas 7-5 7-5 and Tursunov won the battles of qualifiers beating Roger-Vasselin 7-5 6-3.
