Dzumhur upsets Fognini to win first career title in St. Petersburg

Damir Dzumhur finally conquers his first career title after a fantastic week in St. Petersburg. The world no.55 was definitely the underdog in the final against Fabio Fognini, but he managed to find his way after being extremely close to defeat. In fact, Damir was trailing on a 3-6 3-4 scoreline (but still on serve) to completely reverse his fortune after winning 6 of the following 7 games and conquer a decisive 3-1 lead in the decider. That was enough for Damir to win the contest 3-6 6-4 6-2 and capture his first career title.

After this week, Dzumhur is the first player from Bosnia and Herzegovina to win an ATP singles title. This is the second final played by Damir after Winston-Salem where he was the runner-up after losing to Bautista-Agut

The best day of my life. DZUMHUR

After the match, an emotional Dzumhur commented

“I was very nervous today, even though it was my second final. I was very nervous at the start. I couldn’t find my best rhythm, couldn’t find my best game. But the experience of playing one final already helped me a lot, and in the end, I won. In the end, I found my game and played good. It was the best day of my life.”

Well done!
