Reports Says Camila Giorgi Fled To The Us Because Of Tax Issues

Camila Giorgi, a former world No. 26 in tennis, has seemingly retired from the sport amidst speculation surrounding tax problems, according to a report by La Gazzetta dello Sporto. The Italian player, known for her powerful game, has left the tennis world puzzled by her abrupt departure, with no formal announcement or statement released.

Giorgi’s absence from Hologic WTA tournaments since her loss to Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open in March has raised eyebrows. Efforts to reach out to Giorgi have been unsuccessful since her retirement was filed on May 7, adding to the mystery surrounding her exit from the sport.

Reports suggest that Giorgi and her family are facing scrutiny from the Guardia di Finanza, an Italian law enforcement agency, over tax-related issues and undeclared income. This adds to Giorgi’s legal woes, as she was already scheduled to attend a hearing regarding allegations of forging her COVID-19 vaccine documentation during the 2023 Australian Open.

Giorgi denied these allegations, stating, “I just did all my vaccination in different places… So, the trouble is hers. Not me.” Despite her assertions, the legal challenges seem to have taken their toll on Giorgi, leading to her retirement from professional tennis.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sporto, Giorgi and her family are believed to have relocated to the United States, further distancing themselves from the scrutiny in Italy. The sudden retirement announcement caught many off guard, including tennis authorities, as Giorgi’s name appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s retired players list.

Giorgi’s ranking had dropped to No. 116 in the WTA rankings, and she notably did not enter Roland Garros following her retirement. Her decision to retire without public acknowledgment has left fans and the tennis community puzzled, as she has neither addressed the matter with the media nor posted about it on social media.

The 32-year-old’s last competitive appearance was at the Miami Open, where she showed glimpses of her talent against Swiatek. With her retirement, Giorgi will need to adhere to out-of-competition testing regulations for at least six months if she decides to return to the sport in the future.
