DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Sascha Zverev says some journalists “care more about clicks than the actual truth”

Alexander Zverev said at the Australian Open on Tuesday that he did not see any reason to step down from the ATP Players' Council ahead of his court hearing in Germany on allegations of physical abuse.

Ahead of his court appearance in Germany on claims of physical abuse, Alexander Zverev stated at the Australian Open on Tuesday that he saw no reason to resign from the ATP Players’ Council.

According to a court representative, Zverev, who disputes the accusations, is scheduled to appear in court in Berlin on May 31 to answer charges of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. The tennis star appealed the penalty order and 450,000 euros ($489,780) fine that the Berlin district court had placed on him in October, leading to the hearing in May.

Concerning his case involving domestic abuse, Zverev claims that some journalists are more interested in clicks than in the truth. A reporter asked him some questions at the ongoing Australian Open: “Can I ask about the trial in Germany? Do you think it’s appropriate to continue on the ATP Players Council while that case is underway?”

Zverev replied: “Why would it not be?”

Then the reporter asked: “Well, there’s a question mark about your judgment, and the court will decide. Do you have the confidence of your fellow players to continue in that role? There are some people around saying you shouldn’t be playing at all, let alone being in a leadership position. What are your thoughts about that?”

Zverev: “There isn’t. Yeah, I think so. Nobody has said anything to me. I don’t have a reason not to believe that. Like who? Journalists are saying that some are interested more in this story to write about and more about the clicks than the actual truth.”
