Simona Halep beats Ashleigh Barty in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.

Halep has not lost a single set yet in Madrid and she is looking good for her 3rd title. Previously she won this tournament in 2016 and 2017. Her opponent the no.9 seed Australian, Ashleigh Barty pushed hard and used many variations but Halep proved too good for her.

Halep was also helped by solid support she received from the local fans.

The Match

Both players started well till Halep broke Barty in the 5th game to lead 3-2. In the next few games, Barty played some outstanding tennis winning her next 2 service games on love. She broke Halep’s serve in the 10th game to equal at 5-5. Halep, however, proved too strong for Barty winning next two games and set 7-5.

Halep had a smashing start in the 2nd set breaking Barty’s serve on love. However, Barty came strong in the 8th game to break Halep’s serve to equal at 4-4. As in the first set, Halep played some solid tennis in last 2 games to win the set 7-5.

Halep generated a total of nine break points on Barty’s serve.

Halep won 7-5 7-5 in 1 hour and 31 minutes.

With this win, Halep booked her spot in the semifinals of the tournament. She will play either Osaka or Bencic in the semifinal.
