Roger Federer and Serena Williams have many things in common. They are both widely considered as the GOATs (Greatest Of All Time), they both have a fantastic record in terms of slam titles (20 Roger, 23 Serena) and they are both 37.

Of course, at their age, they keep on answering questions about possible retirement and both Serena and Roger confirm that they want to keep on playing.

It’s quite interesting to notice that when Roger and Serena talk about retirement, they have the same approach stating 1 key concept: if you think about retiring you are almost done.

During a recent interview in Miami Roger said that he is reasoning with a 6-months’ window period to add

“I think that the more I think about it [retirement] and the more I talk about it the closer I am to it.

Serena Williams talking about retirement during the Today Show

The American legend expressed the same concept during a recent talk show to share the idea that thinking about retirement could make her get closer to call it a career.

Serena commented

“When you think about all the things that you’ve done, and you like sit down and really meditate on it, it becomes overwhelming like ‘Okay why am I doing this. I don’t need to do this anymore’ so then you just kind of start playing for the love of it.

So I believe if you think about it, you become too satisfied and too content and you lose motivation, and so that’s one of the reasons I never really lose motivation because I’m always thinking about what I want to do next not about what I’ve done already.”

Talking about what Serena wants to do, she added

“I want to keep playing, or else I wouldn’t be training but I definitely want to keep playing and see what’s next.

Obviously, Grand Slams are what’s most important to me.”
