When playing Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Miami Open round of 16, Bianca Andreescu on Monday suffered a catastrophic injury. Andreescu attempted to go after the ball but instead fell to the ground and screamed in pain. Andreescu was heard screaming, “not again,” and “I have never felt this kind of pain before.” just a few seconds after the incident. The doctor hurried onto the court to assist Andreescu, who was given treatment for a short while.
Andreescu was then helped into a wheelchair and led the way out of the court while sobbing. Despite losing the first set to Alexandrova, Andreescu was up 2-0 in the second when the accident happened. Following the game, Alexandrova expressed her sorrow for Andreescu.
Torn ligament
Bianca gave the following updates on social media: “Results show that I’ve torn 2 ligaments in my left ankle. Its tough to say exactly how long it will take, but let’s just say it could’ve been much worse!! I’m going to take it day by day, and I am optimistic that with the right work, rehab, and preparation, I’ll be back on court soon. Rehab process has already started and will continue to give updates.
