The ATP1000 that will be staged in Toronto next week has been losing a lot of important players. Novak Djokovic already stated that it was not his intention to play in Canada this year after the Olympic Games. Roger Federer also has announced his retirement from both Toronto and Cincinnati because of his knee injury. There are some doubts about the participation of Rafael Nadal, who is currently having a tough run at the ATP 500 in Washington.

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev has now announced that he also will not play in Toronto since he still needs to recover from the effort demanded to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

This was Zverev’s statement:

“I regret to inform you that, unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the National Bank Open in Toronto.

Due to the intense past couple of weeks and my incredible experience at the Olympics, I need to recover so that I can hopefully be at my best for the remainder of the U.S. summer swing. It was a difficult decision for me as I have had great memories from Canada and I can’t wait to be back next year!”

Matteo Berrettini, Pablo Carreno-Busta and Milos Raonic will also skip the ATP1000 in Canada.
