Serena was right, her first set against Genie Bouchard was really “embarrassing”.
The world no.1 couldn’t put a ball in to lose the opener 4-6. But Serena is a great champion for a reason and she managed to regroup and actually to play some decent tennis. She wasn’t even far from her best to still commit some uncharacteristic errors, but finally Serena got there to win 4-6 6-2 6-2 in 1 hour and 47 minutes… and 49 unforced errors. Match Stats.
Serena: That was actually embarrassing
The world no.1 described her first set as the worst of her career. She was particularly shocked by a shot that she missed in an unfashionable way to comment “Every ball I hit seemed to be going out and I even had the easiest approach shot and it went not slightly wide, it was like 50 feet out,I thought I’d never hit a shot like that professionally. I have maybe in practice with my eyes closed but never conscious have I hit a shot like that.”
Next vs. Barthel
Serena will play Mona Barthel in the third round. The German has upset Maria Kirilenko 6-4 6-4 in the second round. This will be the first match between these two.
