Becker about the nextgen struggling to win a slam

During a recent chat with Eurosport, Becker stated that the youngsters didn’t manage to win any slam so far because of 2 reasons. First, the big3 are simply too good and consistent. Second, probably they are not good enough yet.

“Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic are incredibly strong and have been doing so consistently for almost 15 years. On the other hand, young players might not be good enough. In my generation, there were 20 and 21-years old players who won Grand Slam tournaments,” he said.

Thiem close to winning a slam

Dominic Thiem has already played 3 slam finals at the Roland Garros (2018 and 2019) and the Australian Open (2020). While Nadal was just too good in both finals in Paris, the Austrian had a strong chance to win the major in Melbourne this year when he was leading Djokovic for 2-1 sets in the final with the Serbian completely out of sorts during that match. Eventually, the world no.1 managed to tap to his legendary mental strength to win the encounter 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4.

Tsitsipas, Zverev and their runs at the majors

However, his dream to conquer a major was shattered by Milos Raonic that defeated him in straight-sets as early as in the 3rd round in Melbourne. Recently, the Greek admitted that it was a mistake to put too much pressure on him.

Tsitsipas RaonicSascha Zverev has a strange relationship with majors. The German has won many prestigious titles such as the ATP1000 in Rome, Madrid, and Montreal. He also conquered the ATP Finals in 2018, but he has never managed to go beyond a semifinal in a major.
