Novak Djokovic overcomes Dominic Thiem 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 in the final in Melbourne on Sunday. The Serbian sensation was just incredible on how he overcame all sorts of problems.

Score, report, and key facts

1st set.

Djokovic started in an ominous way. He had a boost of confidence at the beginning of the set after breaking Thiem in the 2nd game (2-0) before consolidating his break and lead 3-0. Nonetheless, there was more work to do for Djokovic to win the set because Thiem found the way to break back in the 7th (3-4) game. The Serbian kept his cool to break the Austrian in the 10th (6-4) game.

2nd set.

Things got weird in the second set as Nole seemed to be in all sorts of troubles. The Serbian sensation was battling with his body to be at the mercy of the Austrian. Thiem won the set after he broke Novak in the 3rd (2-1) and in the 9th (5-4) game. Djokovic tried to stage a comeback breaking in the 8th (4-4) game. Nonetheless, Dominic didn’t lose the lead before winning the set 6-4.

3rd set.

Thiem was quite dominant at the beginning of the set to break Djokovic in the 1st game (1-0) before consolidating his break and lead 4-0. Thiem managed to strengthen his lead after breaking the Serbian in the 3rd (3-0) game before winning the set (6-2).

An important stage of this contest was when Dominic won 4 consecutive games in the 3rd set to change the scoreline from 0-0 to 4-0.

4th set.

This was probably the most important part of the match. Nole managed to regain some confidence and energy when he was 1-2 down with a couple of smart and well-executed serve and volleys. The set was pretty even as both players managed to hold serve with the notable exception of 1 break that Djokovic conquered in the 8th game (5-3) before winning the set (6-3).

5th set.

Dominic started to play too passively with Djokovic getting more and more condident. Similarly to the 4th set, the set was even with both players refusing to concede anything to the opposition on serve. Eventually, the only discrepancy was one break that Djokovic conquered in the 3rd game (2-1) before winning the set (6-4).

Statistics

After this match, the head to head between Djokovic and Thiem is 7-4 for Novak.
