Karen Khachanov claims his 2nd career title in Marseille after 2016 triumph in Chengdu.
In the final, the Russian had to edge home-favorite Lucas Pouille after a tough battle. Karen had to work hard after he failed to serve out the 1st set when leading 5-4. Eventually, Khachanov broke Pouille soon after to win the opener 7-5.
The Frenchman fought back, and he won the second set after conquering the decisive break in the 6th game (4-2).
The 3rd set was a huge battle as both players managed to hold their serve until the very last game when Pouille was finally broken. Khachanov won the final in 1 hour and 49 minutes, and the result was 7-5 3-6 7-5. The Russian conquered just 3 points more than Pouille (92 vs. 89).
I just needed to keep going. KHACHANOV
Soon after the match, Karen commented
“It is the second title in my career, so I am extremely happy. I just need to keep working and keep going,” said Khachanov. “I felt I was playing good here from the first day. It’s nice to play on a full court in the final, and I hope to come back next year.”
The Russian will now head to Dubai where he will face Istomin in the 1st round. If he has the energy.
