Injury background
Holger Rune, the 23-year-old former world No. 4, has withdrawn from Wimbledon 2026 to prioritize his long-term recovery from an Achilles tendon rupture. The Dane suffered the injury during the Stockholm Open semifinals on October 18 last year and has not played since. His absence has already included the entire clay season and the Queen’s Club Championships.
Rune’s statement
Rune shared his optimism in a message to fans. “I am getting closer every day and feeling the progress is very satisfying. So spirit is high. See you soon,” he said, underlining his determination to return at full strength rather than risk a premature comeback on grass.
Family perspective
His mother and manager, Aneke Rune, confirmed that recent medical scans showed positive signs of recovery. She highlighted his improved movement and ability to train at a high level without setbacks. Aneke also voiced concerns about the current state of tennis surfaces and equipment. “We need better balls and slower courts amid this wave of injuries,” she said, echoing sentiments shared by journalists and medical experts.
Rune’s withdrawal means he will miss Wimbledon for the first time since breaking into the top tier of men’s tennis. Expectations now point to his return during the North American hard-court swing later this summer, where he hopes to regain momentum ahead of the US Open.
