Extreme stuff in Spain!

Conchita Martinez was the captain of both the Fed Cup and the Davis Cup teams of Spain. There was some discontent among the players of the Davis Cup team for having a female leader because they thought that it didn’t fit with the culture of the team, but that was probably not the reason that triggered the Spanish Federation U-turn.

The communicate

The Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) made the following announcement on Thursday

“[We] consider Conchita Martinez’s contract as coach of the Spanish Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams to be finished.

She has done a great job in her years as captain. We have decided to change… going into new challenges in 2018 with our teams.”

The reply of Martinez

Conchita wasn’t as friendly in her comments to say

“I want to share my disappointment and discomfort with the Spanish Federation. It is very ungrateful to take over the helm during a storm and then be taken away after you reach the calm. After all my contribution and dedication to Spanish tennis, I don’t think I deserved an ending like this, so disrespectful.”

The Spaniard was appointed as the Fed Cup captain in 2013 and then she led the Davis Cup team in 2015.

The new captain will be announced soon.
