Shapovalov to lead Canada in Davis Cup

Denis Shapovalov is having an outstanding summer. The 18-year-old from Canada has reached the semi-finals in Montreal before he got to the 4th round at the US Open coming straight from the qualifications.

Denis will go back and play for Canada in the Davis Cup tie against India to also try to forget that horrifying (and unlucky) episode that occurred back in February when during the decisive match against Great Britain he struck the chair umpire in the face because of the frustration of having lost an important serve. The result was a humiliating the disqualification that has also brought his team back to play the playoffs.

From the captain

Canadian captain Martin Laurendeau commented

“For him, that February incident is very far behind him. He’s had a lot of pressure situations since and he’s shown how he’s improved and how he can manage his emotions through the ups and downs of a match.

He’s been doing that ever since.”

The tie will be played next week next week’s tie against India at Edmonton’s Northlands Coliseum.
