How meditation and visualization helped Bianca Andreescu to win the US Open

Bianca explains how she started to meditate

Bianca Andreescu is the 2019 US Open women’s champion. Bianca beat tennis great Serena Williams 6-3 7-5 to win her first Grand Slam title. Serena was also chasing a piece of history as she attempted to win her 24th Grand Slam title to equal Margaret Court’s record. However, it was not her night as the Canadian teenager overcame the pro-Serena crowd to show of her incredible talent and most of all her mental fortitude. In doing so, Bianca became the first Canadian (male and female) ever to win a slam title.

Speaking after the match, an emotional Bianca said that playing Serena, a legend of the game, in a major final was a dream come true for her. “I’ve been dreaming for this moment for the longest time. For it to become a reality is crazy.” The 23,000 strong crowds at the Arthur Ashe Stadium was rooting for Serena to take home the title and did not make life easy for Bianca. In the crowd was the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle seated between Serena’s mother Oracene Prince and Coach Patrick Mouratohglou. All this, however, did not intimidate the 19-year-old as she overcame Serena’s brief comeback and put her away to win the match.

Her mother Maria taught meditation and visualization

When asked how she dealt with the pressure of being in her first Grand Slam final and facing a pro-Serena home crowd, Bianca credited her mum Maria for introducing her to meditation and visualization techniques which she uses to stay focused on the moment. “I started meditating and visualizing ever since I was 12 or 13 when my mum introduced it to me, and I know it wasn’t such a big thing back then, but now it’s getting more popular because I think if you can control your mind, then you can control a lot of things.”

She added that meditation really helped her focus at the opponent regardless of the stakes involved.“I think that’s what’s been working really well for me. I just kept doing that. When I’m on the court in front of these big stages, I’m really good at just blocking everything and staying in the zone.”

Prize money

Bianca will take home $3.85 million dollars in prize money alone from winning the US Open. It has been an incredible year for the 2019 US Open champion. Last year, she did not make it past the 1st qualifying round of the US Open and injuries hampered her ability to hit top form. She, however, kept working hard and this year she has been in incredible form culminating in her taking home her first Grand Slam title. She is currently ranked number 15 in the women singles rankings but will definitely move up after her incredible victory over the greatest women’s tennis player this generation has ever seen.
