Shapovalov breezes to the US Open 2nd round

Denis Shapovalov has a fantastic start of his US Open campaign.

Even if the upcoming Canadian had to find his way to the main draw through the qualifications, he had no problems in dismissing fellow #nextgen Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. The Canadian had to battle hard in the first set after he gave away a 1 break-up lead (from 3-1 to 3-2). Eventually, Denis found the solution at the end of the set when he broke Daniil at love (7-5). There was no fight in the 2nd and 3rd set that Shapovalov won with ease.  The final result was 7-5 6-1 6-2 and this is good news for the Canadian that will have more energy for the second round.

I played a very good match. SHAPOVALOV

After the match, the world no.69 didn’t hide his happiness with how he played to comment

“I think I played a very good match. I stayed very solid from beginning to the end. I had a couple of fall-throughs, being a breakup, having him break back. I did a good job of staying mentally solid in those situations and getting the break when I needed it.

I don’t feel any pressure. At the end of the day, I play for myself, for my team and my country. Those three things I always take with me on the court. I play with my heart. At the end of the day, it’s a sport. I can win, and I can lose.”

Next vs. Tsonga

Denis will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 2nd round. They have never played each other, and the Frenchman is the clear favorite, but so it was Rafa against Denis in Montreal…
