Tennis Swiss sensation Belinda Bencic has praised Rodger Federer for helping her through her injuries. Belinda, who has won three WTA singles titles has struggled with various injuries over the course of her young career which have hindered her from full filling her very obvious potential. The 22-year-old has suffered several injuries including back injuries and a wrist injury that required surgery in 2017.

Federer’s support, concern and mentorship

Speaking to the press, Belinda Bencic praised Federer for his support and concern when she was dealing with the injuries. She noted Federer’s concern, saying that he was always checking up on her when she was dealing with injuries. “Definitely, he was always checking up to see if I was doing better,” she told the press. Belinda praised the 20 time Grand Slam champion for his advice and mentorship during her difficult time dealing with injuries. “Even last year when I got injured in Miami, I ask him, you know, getting the right people for my injury because, I mean, he is a pro at everything. Definitely, he gives me advice. So I was really happy he was checking on.”

The Hopman Cup success

Federer and Belinda have enjoyed success together for team Switzerland. The duo first played together in the Hopman cup in 2017 where they advanced to the finals before losing out to the eventual champions France. They would, however, claim the title in 2018 and became the first duo to win the Hopman cup back to back after winning a close final in 2019 against the German team of Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev. Belinda and Federer have grown close with Roger acting as a mentor to the 22-year-old Swiss. Federer won his first Hopman cup championship with Martina Hingis whose mother Melanie Molitor was Belinda’s coach during the early stages of her career.

Injuries and Potential

Belinda has struggled with injuries after a promising start to her career. She is among the youngest tennis stars to break into the top ten female tennis players rankings while still 18 years of age. Injuries, however, have hampered her growth. She has suffered a back injury which kept her of the court for some time. After a brief comeback, she suffered a wrist injury in early April 2017 which required surgery. Belinda’s talent has never been in question and when on in form she has defeated some of tennis biggest stars such as Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, and Simona Halep. She is currently featuring in the US Open in New York and we hope she can stay healthy and fulfill her awesome potential.
