Rublev wins the title in Umag after not being able to qualify for the main draw

When Andrey Rublev lost to the world no.159 Attila Balazs in the last round of the qualification in Umag, he would have never thought that he was about to win his first career ATP title. Eventually, after Borna Coric retired from the tournament, the Russian had a free ticket to the main draw as a lucky loser. After that, Rublev won the event after dropping only 1 set against Fognini in the main draw.

It’s amazing. RUBLEV

Andrey was completely astonished by his achievement to comment

“It’s amazing. I have no words to explain it, especially after this tough week. Now I’m here, and it’s amazing.”

The last player that has managed to win a tournament as a lucky loser was Rajeev Ram when he triumphed in Newport in 2008.

After this win, Rublev gains 25 places in the rankings to be the new world no.49 (career high). More to come!
