Thiem trashed by world no.222 Ramkumar Ramanathan

Dominic Thiem has often surprised with questionable decisions about his tournament schedules, but this time he went a bit too far.

Ranked no.8, the Austrian seems to be destined to be a world no.1 any time, but he insists on playing all sort of tournaments.

Dominic decided to play the Wimbledon “warm-up” tournament in Antalya on grass where he was seeded no.1. Eventually, the Austrian was trashed in the opener 6-2 6-3 by Ramkumar Ramanathan from India that was coming from the qualifications. The Indian won 57 points vs. Thiem’s 38.

Ramkumar commented

“I just gave it my best and was serving well out there. Two or three points can often make the difference on grass. It’s a good start for my career, but it’s just a start. Hopefully, I can keep it going.”

Great stuff for Ramkumar, but we still wonder what’s the point for Thiem to play these tournaments? Vacation or a huge endorsement?
