Raducanu wary ahead of Australian Open vs. world no.1 95

Raducanu Wary Ahead Of Australian Open

Emma Raducanu admitted she is approaching her first-round match at the Australian Open with caution after drawing world No. 195 Mananchaya Sawangkaew. On paper, the British star, seeded 28th, faces a favorable opponent, but she stressed the danger of underestimating her rival. “I’m approaching this match as seriously as possible because I believe I’m set to face a very dangerous rival,” Raducanu said.

A challenging preparation

Raducanu’s road to Melbourne has been complicated by a demanding schedule and limited preparation time. After competing at the Hobart International, she arrived in Melbourne just two days before her opening match. The quick turnaround left her with little time to adapt to the conditions. “It’s very difficult. You would love to have more time in the environment, more time practising, but I guess I was pretty much handed the schedule to try and turn it around and make the most out of what is in front of me,” she explained.

Injury concerns and pressure

The 23-year-old has also been dealing with lingering physical issues since late 2025, including bone bruising that forced her to withdraw from exhibition matches. Sports science expert Stephen Smith commented on her situation: “Raducanu is in a really unenviable position due to her injury-affected preparations. The Australian Open will be very, very challenging for her,” he said. These concerns have added pressure as she attempts to regain form on the biggest stage.

Focus on the opportunity

Despite the obstacles, Raducanu remains determined to make the most of her chance in Melbourne. Her long-term goal of becoming a seed at the Australian Open has been achieved, and she is eager to prove herself. “I think it’s easy to get down and complain about it, but it’s not going to help. So I’m just trying to focus on what’s in front of me and give everything I can,” she noted.

Raducanu’s clash with Sawangkaew will be closely watched, as it represents both a test of her resilience and an opportunity to build momentum in the new season.
