Zverev triumphs in Rome!

Sascha Zverev surprises everyone after he won his first Master ATP1000 in Rome on his less favorite surface: red clay.

The young German impressed not only for the title, but also because on the way he has defeated extremely tough players such as Fognini (clay court specialist), Raonic, Isner, and a resurgent Djokovic in the final.

The final

Sascha was always in control of the final against Novak Djokovic. The Serbian was playing a fantastic tournament after he reached the final without dropping a single set and following his incredible performance against an in-form Dominic Thiem (Nole won that semi-final 6-1 6-0).

The only difference between Sascha and Nole in the first set was a break in the first game (Djokovic looked pretty nervous). In the second set, the German was completely dominant: he broke his opponent twice, and Djokovic was struggling to hold his serve in every single game while Zverev conceded just 3 points in total on his serve. The final score was 6-4 6-3 with Zverev winning 6-4 points vs. Djokovic’s 48.

One of my best matches ever. ZVEREV

Soon after the match, Sascha commented

“I’m very happy with the way I played and my performance all week, I think today was one of the best matches I ever played. I knew I had to be aggressive from the first point to the last. It was very important for me to be able to stay this aggressive and not let him take over the game.”

This is Zverev 4th career title, the 3rd of this great season. After this tournament, the German will break in the top10, and he will go for more!

A NEW GREAT?
