World no.1 Angelique Kerber humiliated by qualifier in Rome

According to many, Angelique Kerber was not to consider as the strongest player around even if she is ranked no.1, and yesterday the German didn’t do much to prove them wrong in her opener in Rome.

The world no.1 had a horrifying match against uprising star Anett Kontaveit to lose 6-4 6-0 in 58 minutes. What was really surprising was that there was no match at all with the Estonian winning 60 points vs. Kerber’s 37.

It feels great. KONTAVEIT

Anett was visibly (and rightly) jubilant after the match to comment

“It feels great. It’s my first time beating the No.1 in the world, so, you know, I’m super excited.”

Talking about coming from the qualifications, the Estonian added

“I think it does feel like an advantage in a way that I have had a few matches. I feel comfortable on the courts here. Yeah, I think it’s been good.”

Next vs. Lucic-Baroni

Kontaveit will face Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the third round. They have never played each other so far.

KEEP TABS ON ANETT
