INJURY. Why Simona Halep should not play in Cincinnati

Simona has a lot of points to defend in Cincinnati, but...

Simona Halep

Simona Halep was extremely unlucky in Toronto where she was trying to defend her Rogers Cup title.

The Romanian sensation was on a 9-matches winning streak in Canada after she won Wimbledon and she reached the quarters in Ontario. However, the former world no.1 had to withdraw when she was playing Marie Bouzkova when she was 4-6 down because of a problem to her left leg (Achilles). Retiring was probably a good call for Simona that understood it wasn’t sensible trying to put up a fight from 1-set down against the Czech to then (eventually) play the great Serena Williams the day after in the semifinal.

Will Simona play in Cincinnati?

Simona’s problems started already in the opening match in Toronto. The Romanian defeated Jennifer Brady 4-6 7-5 7-6 to admit later that she was struggling with her body and reveal: “My body’s sore. I’m trying to touch my highest level.”

Eventually, Simona looked in great form soon after when she dismissed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 6-1. Nothing was pointing at an injury probably because the match was too fast.

Why Simona should not play in Ohio

It’s not clear if Simona will compete in Cincinnati. In fact, Halep is prone to always trying to compete when nursing an injury, but if the problem to her leg is “half-serious”, it would be better for her not to play in Ohio to rest for a couple of weeks and be ready for the US Open.

Simona has 585 points to defend in Cincinnati where she was the runner-up last year, but she is not chasing the world no.1 rank at the moment and she is in a good position to qualify for the Finals.
