Dimitrov happy to compete in Sofia

Even if Grigor Dimitrov is only seeded no.3 in Sofia, there are no doubts that he is the big star of this ATP250. The Bulgarian will have the support of 10,000 fans, and he is the favorite for the title.

From Dimitrov

Grigor took a selfie before his pre-tournament press conference to then comment

“It’s amazing. I think the last time I competed out here I was a junior, playing on the Futures on the clay courts. It’s very special. I don’t get the chance to come home often, so every time I’m here, it’s always pretty hectic. But what can I do? It’s part of the game. No excuses. I’m here to play tennis.”

Talking about his feelings about the decision of playing the event, Grigor added

“I was excited! I actually asked myself that question ‘What was it like back home?’ and wished I could just have a peek at those kind of moments, even though I was performing. I honestly wished I could see it. I appreciate it. Bulgaria’s a small country. We don’t have that many sports right now, and if I can bring that to the whole nation, it’s pretty amazing.”

Grigor will play either Janowicz or Sela in the opener. After his fantastic Australian Open when he had to bow only in the 5th set of the semi-final against Nadal, the Bulgarian is expected to have a very deep run in Sofia.

Grigor has already won a title this year in Brisbane after he defeated 3 top10 players (Thiem, Raonic and Nishikori). He is going for the second one.

Game on!
