Serena Williams in the mix at the US Open after Wimbledon run. HENMAN

Will Serena match the record of Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slams

Tim Henman, the British great believes that Serena Williams will bounce back despite the fact that she lost to Simona Halep in straight sets in the Wimbledon finals. If Serena conquers the US Open then it will be her 24th Grand Slam title. Williams lost rather meekly to the Romanian by a 6-2 6-2 score.

How many Grand Slams Serena Williams has won?

If Serena wins the US Open then she will equal Margaret Court’s record haul of 24. Henman was surprised when Halep beat the American rather easily in the Wimbledon finals. He referred to the scoreline between Serena and Halep which was totally in favour of the American by 9-1 coming to the finals. He said:

“She’s been in three slam finals in the last year so she’s still playing at a very high level,” Henman told Omnisport. it’s just a question mark of whether she can equal it and overtake Margaret Court. US Open is not far away and I’m sure she’ll be in the mix in New York.”

According to Henman, Halep was a huge underdog coming to the finals but chasing Margaret Court’s record affected Serena and she did not play her best tennis. Henman said that the former world no.1 should once again put her best effort and she will definitely be on top again.

This year Serena lost to Pliskova in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 4-6 6-4 5-7, in the French Open, she was out in the third round. So she is now left with the US Open to achieve the feat of 24 Grand Slams. Williams is in quest of her elusive 24th Grand Slams from the US Open last year. Last year she lost in the finals of the US Open to Naomi Osaka in a controversial match. In the match, Serena was fined $17,000 (£13,100) for calling the umpire a “liar” and “thief”.  She was docked a game for verbal abuse and had a point penalty for smashing her racquet.
