Hewitt defends Kyrgios against McEnroe

Nick Kyrgios and John McEnroe are definitely among the most controversial characters in tennis history. When you mix them up something explosive may happen anytime.

John McEnroe has recently criticized Nick Kyrgios for keeping on saying that he doesn’t like tennis (see article). This comment wasn’t well received by many because was given when Kyrgios was struggling (and about to retire) from the US Open because of an injury. The Australian was clearly in tears on court to show his frustration.

It’s unfair

Lleyton Hewitt, now the captain of the Australian Davis Cup Team, was quite upset for the remarks to comment

“It’s unfair. He was obviously playing with an injury, and I know before the first round that he did have a small hip problem that he actually did two days before the tournament in a practice session.

“It was obviously causing him some discomfort in the first couple of matches. He called the trainer out, and he was feeling it. “He probably would have pulled out sooner in that match last night apart from (the fact) he was on centre court, a big match on Arthur Ashe Stadium and he was kind of the name player in that match as well.

For him to get criticized like that, he would be pretty frustrated.”

Kyrgios was meant to play the Davis Cup in September, but now there are some doubts about his participation.
