Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after a bittersweet victory over Jack Draper. Alcaraz, leading 7-5, 6-1, was on top form when Draper was forced to retire due to injury.

Draper had fought valiantly throughout the tournament, battling through successive five-set matches to reach the fourth round. However, he struggled with mobility issues during today’s match, finally deciding to retire to prevent further injury.

19-year-old Alcaraz, who now stands as one of the youngest players to reach 10 Grand Slam quarter-final appearances in the Open Era, expressed his disappointment, stating: “I am very sad for Draper. He’s a really nice person, and he doesn’t deserve to get injured.” Alcaraz added: “For sure, he’ll come back stronger, as he always does, and I want to wish him a speedy recovery.”

Alcaraz is poised to take on the current ATP leader Novak Djokovic in the next round. This match marks an important milestone in Alcaraz’s young career as he continues his pursuit of a complete Grand Slam title.
