How Roger Federer met his wife Mirka

Federer reveals more about his wife and his family life

Roger Federer has a great family life apart from being one of the best ever on the tennis court. Federer is married to his love of life, Mirka. The couple now has 4 children, a set of girl twins and a set of boy twins.

Who is Mirka Federer

The Slovakian born Mirka Federer is a former Swiss tennis player; she managed to get her best world ranking of 76 in 2001. Mirka competed in all four Grand Slams from the year 1999 to 2001.

Mirka was encouraged to play tennis at the age of 9 by legend Martina Navratilova who thought that Mirka was athletic and can be a good tennis player. However, Mirka left playing tennis after a couple of foot injuries in 2002.

How Federer met his wife Mirka

Federer and Mirka first met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. At that time, Mirka was engaged to a rich Arab, but it did not take long before Federer and Mirka started liking each other. In fact, Federer revealed that the two of them actually had their first kiss on the last day of the Sydney Olympics. This kiss was life-defining for both.

Remembering the first kiss, Federer said later in an interview:

β€œOver the two weeks, we built up some chemistry and didn’t know if this was gonna take us anywhere … or was this just like a moment in time? But it was more than just a kiss. It was something that led to something extraordinary for us, and we’re very happy still to be together.”

It was difficult for Roger to make the first move in love as he is 4 years younger to Mirka:

β€œI tried to tell her I was almost 18 and a half because she told me I was so young when she kissed me … I was like, β€˜Well, I’mΒ almostΒ 18 and a half,’ so I tried to sneak in a quarter year. AΒ quarter year. Back in the day that was a big deal.”

After Sydney, the couple kept on meeting each other and their chemistry was undeniable when they competed as mixed doubles partners in the Hopman Cup in 2002.

By 2003, they were living together in Switzerland. In March 2009, the couple announced that were expecting babies, soon after that, they got married in a small ceremony attended by family and friends.

Roger’s family is a great support system for him. They are often seen during his best matches. At the 2012 Wimbledon final, his girls appeared to watch their father in the Wimbledon final and Roger reacted:

β€œOh my God, that’s like the perfect moment.”

Roger though has to keep away from his family most of the time due to his constant tours but insists that his family is a top priority for him. He revealed an interesting fact about his relationship with Mirka that he never sleeps without she beside him whenever he is in his home in Switzerland.
