Bad news from Vika Azarenka that had to retire in the Roland Garros opener because of a knee injury. The Belarussian was struggling against the world no.118 Karin Knapp to lose the first set 6-3. Vika managed to win the second set at the breaker, but then she had to retire in the third set when she was 6-3 6-7 (6) 4-0 down.
Azarenka. I couldn’t play
Vika was extremely upset after her retirement to comment “I started to feel a sharp pain in my right knee. I’ve had an injury there before, a while ago, but it hasn’t been a problem until today. At first, it was on and off, and I was able to win the tie-break, but then it got worse as the match went on, and unfortunately there was nothing I could do.”
Vika was on a collision course with Serena Williams in the quarters. The American can be relieved.
