Wawrinka wins the title in Geneva

Stan Wawrinka wins his 14th career title I Geneva after defeating Cilic in a tight final. After winning the opener 6-4, Stan had to fight hard in the second set. The home favorite was trailing 1-4 to save 1 set point on Cilic’s serve (5-3) and bring the set to the breaker. The drama unfolded again in the tiebreak when Cilic failed to convert 5 set points to surrender on Wawrinka’s second match point. The final score was 6-4 7-6 (11).

Wawrinka. It’s a dream winning at home

This is Stan’s 14th career title and the first one Switzerland. The world no.4 hasn’t been lucky at home where so far he managed to reach a final in Gstaad 2005 when he lost to Gaudio 6-4 6-4. “It’s a dream come true to be able to win a title in Switzerland, after all these tournaments,” Wawrinka commented. “To be able to do it here in Geneva, in the event’s second year is something special. The fans were great. They made a lot of noise today.”

Stan will now head to Paris where he will play Rosol in the first round. The Swiss has played him already in the Geneva semi.
