Serena ends drought with Rome title

Serena Williams is back in style! The world no.1 hasn’t won a title since August 2015 (Cincinnati), and she needed to regain some confidence.

The American won her 70th title in Rome, “Serena’s way” (i.e., without conceding a single set). The world no.1 had to overcome a big hurdle in the final as her compatriot, Madison Keys, looked to be in great form. After a (typical) slow start, when Serena dropped her serve in the 1st game, the American got back her composure to win three consecutive games and bring the score line from 1-3 to 4-3 in her favor. Eventually, Serena won the 1st set in the tiebreak. Things were easier in the second set for Serena that got a quick 3-0 lead that was critical to winning the set. The final score was 7-6 (5) 6-3.

Serena Williams. Consistency was key

The world no.1 explained what was essential for her to win the final “I think she’s such a powerful player,” Williams said “Obviously going in, I knew that, but I was just trying. I think I was pretty much able to just get back what I could, you know, and that’s all I was trying to do was just to go out there and be consistent, and, yeah, make my shots.”

Rankings

After this title, Serena consolidates his position as world no.1. The American has also moved up 1 place in the “Road to Singapore” rankings. That will be important to qualify for the season’s finale.

Serena seems to be ready to win another slam in Paris.

Just won title number 70 today in Rome… 70 never felt better
