Thiem, Zverev advances in Monte Carlo

Dominic Thiem and Sascha Zverev reach the second round in Monte Carlo.

Thiem

The Austrian had a rather strange match against Jan-Lennard Struff. Dominic looked quite off in the opening set to lose 6-1. Eventually, the youngster found his way soon after to win the match 1-6 6-3 6-4. Thiem will face either Mannarino or Daniel in the 2nd round. After the match it transpired that Thiem has been struggling with a cyst on his foot.

Zverev

Sascha had no problems in defeating his friend Andrey Rublev 6-1 6-3. After the match the German commented “We’ve known each other since we were 11 years old. We’ve been playing for such a long time on different levels of the tour. Under 14 tournaments, ITF tournaments and now this is the first time we played in a professional event. It’s nice to see how we both have grown really. So I think that was just the first one of many.”

Zverev will face Ferrer in the 2nd round. He will have nothing to lose.

After this tournament, Zverev will move in the top50. His target of the year should be breaking in the top20.
