Top seed Tsitsipas suffers a shock defeat against Jarry in the Libema Open

Jarry beats Tsitsipas by 2-1

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nicolas Jarry faced each other in the 2nd round of the Libema Open. Both the players were playing against each other for the first time.

The top seed Tsitsipas suffered a shock defeat against Chilean, 60th ranked Jarry. The 20-year-old was playing for the first time after his dramatic 4th round defeat against Wawrinka in the French Open. When the match started, the Greek star was favourite to win it considering his much superior world ranking than his opponent. The Greek is ranked sixth in the world while the Chilean is ranked 60th. This was the first match for Tsitsipas on grass this season.

The Match

The Chilean had a fantastic start to the match breaking the opening serve of the Greek. The world no.6 did well to save 2 break points in the 9th game but that did not stop the 60th ranked Jarry from winning the 1st set 6-4 in 44 minutes.

The Greek got his rhythm back in the second set breaking the 1st service game of Jarry and lead 2-0. The Greek star then went on to win all his service games to win the set 6-3 in 34 minutes.

In the 5th game of the third set, the Greek got 3 break points but was unable to convert. Both the players won their service games till the 9th game. The Chilean broke the service of the young Greek star to win the set 6-4 in 44 minutes.

Jarry won the match 6-4 3-6 6-4 in 2 hours and 2 minutes.

Jarry will either face Kazakh Mikhail Kuskushkin or France’s Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
