Wawrinka wins the title in Dubai

Great stuff from Stan Wawrinka that wins the prestigious ATP500 in Dubai after defeating a sticky Baghdatis.

Stan was the clear favourite in this final even if Marcos has been showing one of his best tennis during the week. Stan won the first set after being 1 break down (2-3) to immediately break back Marcos n the following game at love. Eventually the Cypriot caved in again in the 10th game of the opener to surrender his service once again after having saved 4 break points.

The real drama unfolded in the breaker of the second set that the Swiss won at 13 (!!!). During the tiebreak Stan saved 5 set points (5/6, 7/8, 8/9, 9/10 and 11/12) while Marcos saved 3 match points (6/7, 10/11 and 12/13). Eventually Stan got this one to win the match 6-4 7-6 (13)

Stan focussed his attention on the mammoth tiebreak in the subsequent interview “I think in general it was a good level,” commented Wawrinka. “It was tough conditions to play here, [the ball is] flying. It’s fast. Until 6-all in the tie-break I was always up with mini break. I think I hit two double faults and three quick mistake. Then it started to be all about nerves. You know, 6/6, 7/7, 10/10. You try to stay there. Try to play simple, aggressive. It was good to finish it in two sets.”
