Djokovic defeats Zverev to make it to semifinals of the French Open for the 9th time

Djokovic through to the semifinals of the French Open

Novak Djokovic has beaten Alexander Zverev to reach the semifinals of the French Open for the 9th time. This is also the 26th consecutive Grand Slam win for the champion player. In total, the world no.1 has been 35 times in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament.

The Serb is just 2 matches away from holding all the 4 Grand Slam titles for the 2nd time.

The world no.1 beat the German 7-5 6-2 6-2 in 2 hours and 9 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier. It was a pure display of class from the Serbian.

The Match

In the 1st set both the players did well to win their service games till the 8th game to level at 4-4. The German then clinched the first service break and lead by 5-4, however, the world no.1 broke the next 2 serves of his opponent to win the set 7-5.

The 2nd and the 3rd set was rather easy for the Serb as he out-maneuvered the German in long rallies. The world no.1 dominated Zverev as he won 13 of the first 14 points in the 2nd set.

Djokovic won the second and the third set with a 6-2 scoreline.

What the Serb said after the match

After the match, the world no.1 commented:

“He has a very strong serve so that was a big challenge for me to find a good position to return, I played five or six games perfectly. I started hitting the ball a bit more cleanly. It’s good to finish today after the rain yesterday. It’s important to focus on the present moment without thinking about the next day. I’m in the semi-finals and I’m very happy with that. I hope I will continue to play well.”

Djokovic has not dropped a set yet in the tournament but he is certainly up against a tougher challenge from Thiem in the semifinals. Thiem will gain confidence from the fact that he beat Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2017 in straight sets ( 7-6 6-3 6-0).
