If Novak Djokovic is healthy and able to compete in the 2024 Wimbledon tournament, Jannik Sinner has declared that the Serbian will be the overwhelming favourite.
The Italian acknowledged that he felt extra pressure to perform well in a tournament as the world number one seed in Halle, but he would not be dragged into a favourite role. To win his first title on grass courts, Sinner defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the Halle Open final on Sunday, 7-6(8), 7-6(2).
At the French Open earlier this month, Sinner rose to the top of the global rankings for the first time in his career. He will start as the top seed at Wimbledon on Monday.
Djokovic defeated the Italian in last year’s All-England Club semifinals. In 2022, he was defeated by the legendary tennis player in the quarterfinals despite leading 2-0 in the first two sets.
Sinner discussed his feelings going into Wimbledon and evaluated the front-runners in an interview.
Sinner expressed his thoughts about it and said: “I can be a little more aggressive, understand better how to move. It will be a difficult tournament, but also fun. I like Wimbledon: last year I played well and only lost in the semi-final. Let’s see what I can do this year. I will fly to London relatively soon, I hope to do a good preparation and then we will see how it goes: I will do my best. We are all excellent players and there can always be some surprises in a tournament like Wimbledon. So I won’t say whether I’m the favourite or not.”
He added: “Djokovic certainly is: if he comes back if he is fit, he is the favourite. Alcaraz won last year, and [Alexander] Zverev is playing very well. We see. It will be a very interesting tournament.”
