Federer overcomes tough challenge from friend Wawrinka to reach the semifinals in Paris

Federer reaches the semifinals of the French Open

Roger Federer is playing in the French Open for the first time in 4 years but with his performance, he seems that he never missed it. The Swiss champion beat his friend Stan Wawrinka 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 in 3 hours and 35 minutes.

With this win, the Swiss has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament for the first time since 2012.

The Match

In the first set, both the players played well on their serves and the score was level at 6-6. The set was decided in the tie-break which Federer won to claim the set 7-6.

In the second set, Wawrinka prevailed over his Swiss compatriot to break him in the 3rd game of the match and lead the set 2-1. Wawrinka held on to his early advantage against his opponent to win the set 6-4.

The 3rd set was again was a tough fight with both the players breaking each other’s serve. The set was level at 6-6 and in the tiebreak, Federer won to win the set 7-6.

The match was interrupted by rain in the fourth set and when both the player returned to the Court, the world no.3 earned the 2nd break of the match. The 28th ranked struggled hard to level in the set but it was the 2009 champion who emerged the winner.

Federer is now the second oldest man to reach the semifinals of the tournament. Before him, Pancho Gonzales made to the semifinals at the age of 40 in the year 1968.

The Swiss will now meet his long-time rival Nadal in the semifinals. The Spaniard has a huge advantage over the world no.3 on clay but Federer will definitely try to come against the odds.
