Federer Gets Emotional

The documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days, which follows Roger Federer in his last days before retiring, unveiled a new trailer on Monday, June 3. The trailer, which was produced in association with Amazon Prime Video, includes emotional remarks from rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, along with clips from the Laver Cup.

His anxiety just before he announced the news to the public was also caught on camera.  Federer said in the video: “What are we, 45 minutes away from posting? Every message now, I’m like, ‘Ah!’.”

The 20-time Grand Slam champion admitted that he is an emotional person while discussing his retirement. He added that tennis had been very kind to him and that he had to accept that it was time to hang up his racket.

Federer further said: “Now I feel stressed. Big day. Hopefully, I will not be using those tissues. But I am an emotional guy, so we’ll never know. I am forty-one years old. I have played more than 1500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamed. And now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.”

The Swiss maestro was nervous even as he watched the teaser, which he posted on his Instagram account. He wrote: “Still makes me stressed watching this. Excited to share this with everyone on June 20th.”
