After learning of Camila Giorgi’s abrupt retirement from tennis, Italian Billie Jean King Cup captain Tathiana Garbin acknowledges that she is a little worried about the 2021 Montreal champion, but she is still optimistic that everything is well with Giorgi and that she just gave up the sport due to her recent performance.

Giorgi, one of the top Italian WTA players in recent years, seems to have abruptly stopped playing tennis without warning or any indication that it would happen.

It was just earlier this week when Giorgi’s name appeared on the ITIA’s list of retired players. Many felt confused by this because Giorgi hadn’t played since March and the Miami Open was her sixth match of the year.

Garbin told the media recently: “There’s a bit of concern. The last time we spoke was before the Billie Jean King Cup and she didn’t give me availability to come to Seville with the team due to a foot problem. I hope that she is well, that there are no problems and that she has left this sport that has given her so much serenity. I believe that for a player who has reached the top, it is difficult to then start again from the qualifiers with a low ranking. A conclusion was perhaps necessary.”
