Berrettini’s withdrawal raises more questions about his fitness for the upcoming French Open, which starts on May 28, 2023. The Italian Open is considered a significant clay-court tournament leading up to Roland Garros.
Berrettini commented: “I tried to get in shape for tomorrow, but I couldn’t. I’m not ready to compete, I risk hurting myself and then staying out for longer. I had to put my heart aside. I hope to return to Paris.”
