Rafael Nadal reflected on an emotional farewell at the 2024 Madrid Open after what was probably his last match in his native country.

After losing to Jiri Lehecka 7-5, 6-4 in Tuesday’s Madrid Open fourth round, Nadal was honoured in a heartfelt on-court ceremony. The 37-year-old stated that he intends to play in the upcoming Italian Open in Rome and that he will later announce if he will attend the French Open in 2024.

Nadal expressed his thoughts in a recent press conference and said: “I’m going to try to play in Rome. It was a very special tournament in my career. I won 10 times. I dreamed of playing all these tournaments one more time. I missed Monte Carlo. But now I want to play Rome. And play well. Give me a chance to make that happen. Today is an unforgettable day. Saying goodbye to Madrid. But my career keeps going.”
