Former World No. 1 tennis player Boris Becker has extended his support to Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jr. following the footballer’s emotional remarks about experiencing racism.
Vinicius, a two-time La Liga champion with Real Madrid and a UEFA Champions League winner during the 2021-22 season, recently spoke out about racism during a press conference with Brazil. He expressed frustration with the lack of understanding and empathy from some individuals, stating, “I left Brazil very young and haven’t been able to learn many things. I’m studying. I’m 23 and I’m still studying. Why can’t they, the reporters here, who are older than me, study and see what’s really going on? I’m getting sadder and sadder, I feel less and less like playing. But I’m going to keep fighting.”
Highlighting the significance of the fight against racism, Vinicius emphasized the importance of allowing people of color to lead normal lives. He drew strength from his family, fans, and messages of encouragement as he continues to advocate for those affected by racism. “Playing football is important, but the fight against racism is very important. Let people of color have a normal life. Above all, I get [strength] from my family, from the fans and from those people who give me messages of encouragement to continue fighting for those who need it. I’m sorry but I just want to play football, do everything for club and family, never see black people suffering,” he added.
